Season 2 of “Empire” came to an end on Wednesday night (May 18), and unlike the finale of Season 1, which had a dizzying number of twists and turns before the credits rolled, the episode entitled “Past is Prologue” was a slow burn. Knowing there would an epic Lyon wedding for Hakeem (Bryshere Gray) and Laura (Jamila Velazquez) to look forward to, audiences waited with baited breath for what was sure to be an epic disaster.

Hakeem and Laura never say “I do,” which isn’t too shocking. But no one was expecting this certain pair of ex-lovers to have a wedding ceremony in their place. Because it is twisted as all hell.

At first it seemed that Shine (Xzibit) is going to ruin the wedding, but that honor belongs to the person who had the unfortunate job of having serve Boo Boo Kitty with a summons, and all hell breaks loose. Laura runs away in tears away from Hakeem and the entire Lyon family, which is probably best for the sweet innocent girl and her straight laced family. Nothing good comes marrying into this family. A fact that “Empire” really drives home in the last minute of the episode.

So, what’s the only way to keep Anika from testifying against Lucious (Terrence Howard)? Put a ring on it! Gotta get that spousal privilege. So, Hakeem’s wedding day turns into the day his baby’s mama marries his father. If you think that’s too much to handle, just ask Cookie (Taraji P. Henson). She storms off. After her and Lucious were so close to rekindling their relationship, she can’t stand sit by and watch him marry the woman she despises so much.

After they tie the knot, Lucious tells Anika that he knows that is was her who pushed Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday) down the stairs and Anika can’t even deny it.  She’s so shaken that her secret’s out, that for the second time Boo Boo Kitty runs up to the high-rise balcony, preparing herself to jump off. However, this time Cookie isn’t there to talk her off the ledge. Rhonda’s there instead and she’s ready for a catfight. As the two women go after each other, the screen cuts to black just after Andre (Trai Byers) yells, “No!”

Who won the fight? Did they both die? After the most twisted, nearly-Shakespearean wedding, “Empire” leaves audiences with a cliffhanger of not knowing which Mrs. Lyon fell to her death. Or maybe neither of them did? Audience will have to wait and see who lives in Season 3. No premiere date has been set, but the hit FOX series will likely return sometimes in fall 2016.
