Season 2 of Sony’s “Powers” premieres on Tuesday (May 31), and Zap2it got to visit their new set in Atlanta while they were in the midst of filming.
While on set, we interviewed the cast to see what’s to come, found out which new guests will be joining them and asked repeatedly, “Who killed Retro Girl?” They remained tight-lipped on that last question but rest assured that the answer that questions will soon be revealed in this upcoming season.

The series, which streams via PlayStation Network, already let viewers know that the powers-obsessed Calista Seycor will be stepping into Retro Girl’s shoes, for which actress Oleysia Rulin couldn’t be more excited. “I can fly! It’s a cape! It’s so cool. I flew from a four story building the other day on this giant blue screen, and I was like, ‘Mom! I made it!'”
But Rulin says that Calista is going to struggle to figure out how her new powers work. “What can she do? Can she punch a rock? Does it explode or does it not do anything? Can I lift a car? Am I bullet proof? Wolf ate so many people, so now we have to backtrack and be like what did all those people do?”
Rulin discussed her character’s other major story arc dealing with the return of her father. “Calista hasn’t seen her father since she was a kid. So it’s a mixed emotions kind of experience,” she says. “This is the first time she’s confronted him. But at the same time, I think she was a Daddy’s girl [and] always wanted to connect. So it boils down to quite an eruption.”
Getting to know the new Retro Girl, however, is just the start of the major surprises in store from writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Avon Oeming’s comic book universe.
Other exciting news include that cast addition of veteran actor Michael Madsen, who will be playing the role of Super Shock, rumored to be one the most powerful superheroes in the “Powers” world. Actress Tricia Helfer has come on board as FBI Special Agent Lange, who will have trouble balancing her alliances with both the government and the Powers community. And leading the anti-powers movement as Senator Bailey Brown, actor Enrico Colantoni.
The mystery of who killed Michelle Forbes’ Retro Girl will be a slow burn throughout the second season, as well as the theme of the effects of living in a celebrity obsessed culture and questioning whether or not these so-called heroes deserve such a title, or if they’re actually just horrible people blessed with too much power.
The show will also be exploring Kutter (Leak) and Deena Pilgram’s (Susan Heyward) personal relationship possibly growing into more as they work together to investigate Retro Girl’s murder. Leak says that Kutter “is a ladies man. In working in such close proximity with Deena, I know that Kutter starts to see her a little differently. What I’m really loving about this season, is that exploration of Kutter that we haven’t yet seen. Viewers will be intrigued as to how that relationship plays out.”

Christian Walker (Sharlto Copley) sees that budding relationship a bit differently. When it comes to Kutter and Deena working together, “Interesting stuff happens with them that Walker finds disgusting and funny at the same time,” Copley says. As for his own character’s transition in Season 2, he says that “after the death of Retro Girl, he realizes a lot of thing about himself. He’s lost everything. It’s when you start to question who you are.”
“Powers” Season 2 will stream the first three episodes beginning on May 31, with a new episode then airing every Tuesday on PlayStation.
