Tears & tantrums abound in emotional ‘Drag Race All Stars 2’

Still reeling from last week’s shocking elimination, our fingers were crossed that “Drag Race” would get her weave back on right come Thursday night (Oct. 6) — and inviting the remaining contestants’ moms and sisters to join them on the runway seemed like the perfect antidote to past weeks’ drama.

The tears and emotions flying all over the first half of the episode had us thinking, Tatianna who? And if you weren’t already aware of Roxxxy Andrew’s heart-wrenching story — her biological mother left her and a sibling at a bus stop when she was three years old — well, grab some tissues, henny.

It was truly beautiful to see Katya, Roxxxy and Alaska do up their moms in drag, and Detox and Alyssa Edwards glamming up their sisters. It was clear that all these relationships have had their share of bumps in the road.

Between first coming out as gay and then revealing their love for drag, not every queen’s family was instantly accepting. Hardly any of us feel completely understood by our relatives, but when the people we love can’t find a way to adjust, it’s heartbreaking for everyone.

But now: They’re all here. Proud moms and sisters standing by their sons and brothers, championing their unique talents.

The tight bond between the duos as they vogued down the runway was palpable, and so much fun to watch. For a moment, we thought it might be announced that no one would go home this week — everything was just too wonderful!

But then RuPaul declared Katya and Detox the week’s Top 2, and — as we’re down to the Final 5, the 3 remaining girls were all on the bottom. It was wishful thinking that Mama Ru wouldn’t tell anyone to sashay away because their family members were around, after all. This isn’t “Oprah” — not everybody’s getting a car, and not everybody can be this year’s Drag Superstar.

Not handling this news very well? Alaska, this season’s most consistent performer, really dropped the ball with the runway looks she made for her mother, and the realization she might be sent packing, after dominating thus far, made her livid. Perhaps she regressed to acting like a child because her mother was in the workroom, but either way: Alaska had a full-blown, nasty temper tantrum. Ripping off her outfit, copping an attitude when any of the other queens spoke to her… It was an ugly side to the usually slow talking, confident, cool contestant we’re used to seeing — and loving.

The lip sync battle between Katya and Detox was fierce. By far, the most entertaining battle of the season. Detox was named the winner — and of course with great power, comes great responsibility. The answer here should’ve been simple: Roxxxy is way past time to head home. But if Detox wanted to play the game and bounce her biggest competition, she had the prime opportunity to do so by sending Alaska packing.

When Detox announced she’s sending Alyssa Edwards home, we threw the remote control at the TV. What. Is. Happening?  All the residual emotion from Tatianna going home came rushing back, our fervor growing tenfold. In no way should Alyssa Edwards have gone home this week! Based on either this night’s competition, or her overall critiques throughout the season, the decision was unfounded and infuriating.

And so the Final Four now stands: Alaska, Detox, Katya… and Roxxxy?

We love Roxxxy! But at this level of competition, and this late in the “All Stars” season, homegirl should’ve gone home three weeks ago. We’d be less upset if Detox sent home Alaska. A ballsy move she definitely would’ve gotten ready for, but it would’ve been worth it: At least it would be a strategic play viewers could understand, regardless of its pettiness. But sending Alyssa home? Child, please.

Right now, “All Stars 2” makes as much sense as whenever Ru says, “She done already done had herses.” No clue, even today, but it’s RuPaul: Whatever she says and does is always fantastic — or at least until now. For the moment, this current “All Stars” season is almost making us wonder.

“Drag Race: All Stars 2” airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Logo & VH1.
