Breakups are hard. There’s never an easy way to break someone’s heart, or get your heart broken, and then there’s all the inevitable awkward conversations of having to announce the sad news to mutual friends and family members. But actor Alex Pettyfer took things to a new level when he announced his split with supermodel Marloes Horst via Instagram — complete with his own self-created hashtags.

Seriously, who creates their own break-up hashtags? On Monday (March 21) the “Magic Mike” star posted a photo of himself and his girlfriend of two years with the following caption:
“I wouldn’t normally do this as I like to keep my life private, Despite what may be written, Marloes and I split up due to her being a crazy hot supermodel and her and my work just keeping us apart. It was a mutual decision, We are incredible close and love each other tremendously !!! We are best friends and who knows what the future holds. #shewillalwaysbefamily #factisgreaterthanfiction”
Horst posted the same photo but with a different, albeit equally awkward, caption: “Despite of what some papers may say, Alex and i split due to our busy schedules. It’s sadning to read these negative articles since we are very close and love each other dearly! So we took it into our own hands to say it was a mutual decision, we are best friends and will always remain each others family. #loveisalwaystheanswer”
And these two aren’t the first celebrities to announce a breakup on social media.
Avril Lavigne & Chad Kroeger
Shannon Elizabeth & Derek Hough
With matching since-deleted tweets they said “Hi, everyone. We wanted you all to know directly from us that Derek and I have decided to end our relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend. However, we love & care about each other very much & will remain friends & in each other’s lives.”
Heidi Klum & Seal
Seal was much less wordy when it came to telling the world about his split with ex-wife Heidi Klum in 2005. The singer simply said, “The End” to his nearly 175 thousand Twitter followers, 24 hours before the official announcement was released.
Monyetta Shaw & Ne-Yo
In 2013, the rapper announced his breakup with then-fiance and the mother of his two children on Instagram.
Allison Pill & Jay Baruchel
After a two-year engagement, actor Jay Baruchel spilled his feelings in a tweet after getting dumped by “Newsroom” actress Allison Pill.
“Alone again, naturally. Heartbroken,” he tweeted. “I won’t be on twitter for awhile gang. Getting dumped rules.”
Lesson learned? Breaking up is already tough, announcing it on social media can only make things worse.
