To describe “Broad City” in a way that its stars Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer would, this show is like the freshest California weed, tightly packed into strawberry flavored paper, for which only a few deep inhales will you leave high with laughter, perhaps with a few moments of extreme paranoia, but ultimately leave you with the biggest smile your face. As Season 3 of their hit Comedy Central show comes to a close on Wednesday night (April 20), it’s easy to imagine that Abbi and Ilana will soon be sweeping up come awards season

The girls’ tight friendship extends far past the “Broad City” set. Abbi and Iliana’s bond is reminiscent of comedy queens Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler. Their trust and understanding of each other’s humor runs so deep, that they are able to take jokes to the next level. Because they are each so committed to whatever crazy idea or ridiculous plan each other sets out to do, the show never comes off as stupid meaningless slapstick. It’s genuinely humorous, always a bit raunchy, with surprisingly heartfelt moments sprinkled in. The perfect trifecta.
Abbi and Ilana Facetime with each other while pooping. They’ve camped out on the roof while AirBnB’ing their apartments for extra cash. Ilana invented “period pants”- jeans with an obvious red blood stain in the crotch area for which she can safely sneak pot through airport security when a dog sniffs her out in line. These weed-induced ideas sometimes turn out to be a train wreck, like when their rooftop tent blew off and Abbi’s apartment got robbed. But other times, like with the “period pants,” you can’t help but gleefully think that s genius!
Audiences have fallen in love with Abbi and Ilana’s portrayal of two women in their late 20s who are just trying to make their way through life in New York City. “Broad City,” which has already been renewed through Season 5, ended Season 3 with the girls going on a free trip to Israel called Birthmark (very similar to the real life free trip Jews go on as young adults called Birthright), and their hilariously exaggerated portrayal of this event tied a perfect bow on this gift of a season.
While “Inside Amy Schumer,” most deservingly got its due during awards season last year, the 2016 Emmys, Golden Globes, People’s choice, etc., belong to “Broad City.” No other series has been so consistently funny throughout its entire season. Also, what other show was able to get Sen. Hillary Clinton, who could soon be America’s first female president to go on national TV and joke about pegging?
Abbi and Ilana had a slew of amazing celebrity guests this past season such as Cynthia Nixon, Alan Alda, and Blake Griffin, but the fact that they got the former Secretary of State, who has zero comedic chops, to appear on their show as both cool and laugh out loud funny, and without forcing any sort of political agenda? These ladies better start practicing their acceptance speeches.
