On Monday (June 13), Season 4 of “Are You the One” premiered, and if you were looking to fill the “The Bachelorette” void, this MTV competition series just may do the trick. There are numerous awkward make-out sessions — in a forced matchmaker setting — which makes for highly entertaining cringe-worthy television. The gist is simple enough: twenty good-looking contestants move into a gorgeous Hawaii mansion to see if they can work together and figure out each of their pre-determined perfect mates. If successful, there’s a shared grand prize of $1 million.

“Are You the One” is an interesting twist on the social dating experiment. Most of the contestants’ first crushes are not their true match, and discovering that news in the Truth Booth turns out to be both devastating and confusing for everyone involved. One could say, “Screw science! I will hook-up with whoever I want,” but the repercussions of such actions will ruin everyone’s chances of winning the prize money. Unlike “The Bachelorette,” this show is not about meeting the person for whom you have the best chemistry. It’s about finding the person for whom scientific data and research has matched you with. Oh, and in case we weren’t clear, it’s also about walking away with a whole bunch of money.
Hosted by Ryan Devlin, this season is packed with a slew of eccentric singles. And former “So You Think You Can Dance” contestant, Asaf Goren, stands out for all the wrong reasons. While he has the body of a Greek God, every girl in the house appears to shiver in her bikini at the thought of him being her perfect match.
Which lucky girl will find Goren, who’s also known as The Naked Break Dancer, to be the man of her dreams?
While the jury is still out on which woman will be doing some deep soul searching as to what part of her personality and brain makes Goren her perfect match, the house of contestants did pretty well for their first attempt at paring up. Three light bursts into the night sky revealed three guess matches were paired correctly. A collective sigh of relief could be heard — that would’ve been $250,000 docked from their prize pool if these guesses were wrong.
So which pairs did they guess right? Nobody knows. But it’s three of the following couples: Kaylen & Gio, Victoria & Cam, Francesca & Asaf, Emma & John, Camille & Prosper, Alyssa & Sam, Mikala & Cameron, Julia & Morgan, Nicole & Stephen and Tori & Tyler.
Needless to say, the guessing game has just begun.
