Few TV shows succeed at mixing so much unbridled fun and mounting suspense into one episode, but the highly anticipated “The Flash”-“Supergirl” crossover did just that. To put it bluntly, it did not disappoint.

With Monday’s (March 28) episode, titled “World’s Finest,” the CBS freshman drama really started coming into its own. Having an established superhero like The Flash come to National City allowed the writers of “Supergirl” to both raise the stakes dramatically and have the confidence to toy with some colorful self-aware jokes.

Watching Barry Allan (Grant Gustin) assist Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) in taking down Livewire (Brit Morgan) and Silver Banshee (Italia Ricci), was superbly entertaining. While Ricci was a biting delight as Siobhan Smythe, Banshee wins the award for having the most obnoxious super power ever, a deafening scream that audiences will definitely not miss.

The crossover episode kept the surprises coming until the very end. Supergirl and James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) finally have their first real kiss. Just when you think sparks of passion are going to fly between these two, Olsen suddenly freezes up — seemingly controlled by some mysterious outside power.

Like a robot, Olsen exits Supergirl’s apartment. It’s not until Kara looks out her window, that she begins to realize something bigger is happening. On the streets below, she sees the entire city marching in perfectly formulated lines. It’s definitely an eerie scene, reminiscent of Nazi Germany.

Clearly, something very evil is at play. We soon find out that Myriad — the thing Aunt Astra (Laura Benanti) kept mentioning before she died — has been successfully activated by Non (Chris Vance).

What is Myriad? It’s the powerful force of mind control.

“Humanity is the disease. Myriad is the cure,” Non said in the previous episode, “For The Girl Who Has Everything.”

Non, and his now deceased wife Astra, both firmly believed that mind control was the only way to keep peace in the world. Differing opinions on the use of Myriad is what ultimately tore Astra from her twin sister, Alura Zor-El (aka Supergirl’s mother). It looks like Myriad will once again be threatening mass destruction — this time, on Supergirl’s Earth.

“Supergirl” airs on Monday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
